Glen Nevis and Steall Gorge
Glen Nevis, from the Gaelic Gleann Nibheis, is a stunning and much visited glen right at the heart of Lochaber. At the South end you have the Mamore mountain and to the North you will be greeted by the tallest peaks in the UK; Ben Nevis, Carn Mor Dearg, Aonach Mor and Aonach Beag. It is also home to one of the three highest waterfalls in Scotland; Steall Falls which feeds into the Water of Nevis.
As you drive to the head of the glen you’ll come to a car park which marks the setting out point of a beautiful walk up through Steall Gorge which takes you right to the base of Steall Falls. It’s a rocky and exciting walk yet fairly unchallenging underfoot although caution and sensible shoes are advised.
The hike takes you past mind boggling geology where the glacial water has forced its way through giant stone formations over millions of years, the whole time surrounded my staggering views down the length of Glen Nevis. The path eventually opens out into a peaceful and unexpected glen where you can test your nerves crossing a wire bridge if you fancy a closer look at the mighty waterfall which rumbles beneath the bridge on its way out to Loch Linnhe. It’s a relatively short walk and can easily be done inside a couple of hours and that includes time for a sandwich and a photograph or two!
Interesting facts:
Several films have had key sequences shot in Glen Nevis including Mel Gibson’s internationally successful Braveheart, Liam Neeson’s Rob Roy and J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series.
Glen Nevis has been the home of the Cameron family name since 1536. At the time of the Jacobite Rebellion between 1688 and 1746 many Scots would plan their attacks on the English soldiers stationed in Fort William.
Every year on the August Bank Holiday a 2 mile race down River Nevis takes place, with competitors using various floatation devices to navigate the river. It takes anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours (likely depending on the size of the competitor!)
